In 2016, I followed two women from Cuba to the US, through 13 countries. It all started in this moment, from my book: “Before I met Marta, I met her hand, hanging out the window of a car and holding a cigarette. I approached the dark-green buggy and took a picture.” she was the friend of Minerva, a woman who’s blackmarket clothing business I had been photographing. The day I met Marta, she and Minerva picked me up at a police station in Havana after a quick detention for photographing a police officer.
